Most barristers and lawyers say they love the law.

I do.

The mental rigour.
Understanding how things fit together.
People issues and obstacles.
The strategy.
Helping people when they are going through one of the most stressful times of their lives ...now in mediations.

There’s a real sense of purpose in legal work.

The law isn’t the problem.

The problem is what gets dismissed or accepted inside the profession.

Because if you’ve been practising for more than two minutes, none of this will surprise you.

Burnout.
Bullying.
Harassment.
Marginalisation.
Long hours teach people that they must sacrifice everything to succeed in law - that's the standard.
A competitive culture where people feel they must compete with, or walk over, others to get ahead.

Most barristers and lawyers see it.

They complain and talk about it privately.
Many think "it's just how it is in law..."
It's what I signed up for when I chose law.

And very few change anything about it.

Because legal expertise and experience don’t change any of this.

Leadership does.
And leadership in law is influence.

Influence over how people think and behave.
How teams operate and follow.
How conflict is resolved, not because a new process is introduced, but because someone influences people and what happens in a room.
How decisions get made.
And what standards are accepted — and what standards are not.

Not titles.
Not authority.
Not technical excellence or experience alone.

The barristers and lawyers who improve the profession are the ones who love the law enough to change what happens inside it.

They learn how to lead effectively.
They learn how to influence others simply.

That’s the work I do to help 3+ PQE barristers and lawyers (and law firms) prepare, perform, and lead through influence, recalibrating how they prepare, perform, and lead in high-stakes rooms.

If you want to be a top 1% leader in the profession, not just love the law and practice it. Join me at the Leaders Influence workshop.

Because loving the law creates technical experts.

Top 1% leaders love the law enough to influence others and change the profession, not just succeed inside it.
