Barristers + Lawyers - It Costs YOU - Either Way!

You tell yourself you'll take time off when things settle down or at the end of the year when the courts close.

Except things never settle down.
Because you won't let them.

I'm visiting the Space Needle in Seattle today and will be boarding a cruise back to Sydney in a few days.

Before, when I accepted litigation briefs as a barrister, I still took time off to go to Israel, Jordan, Panama Canal, South America, Boston, Chicago, Antarctica (and more).

Frequently, not at the end of the year, when it was "slower."

And I know what you're thinking: "That's great for you, but I can't. My clients need me. If I step away...I just can't, it's too busy, and it's almost at the end of the year, it's just not possible."

But let's be honest about what you're really afraid of:
→ A client gets annoyed (while your colleague handles them just fine)
→ Your workload and deadlines before the end of the year feel overwhelming
→ Someone else gets the brief you would've got
→ You look less committed than everyone else

So you stay.
You don't make plans.
You tell yourself next year will be different.

But what's that costing you?
→ You're exhausted
→ You resent the career and life you've built (with long, never-ending to-do lists).
→ You've spent years following a path you didn't choose—you're doing what everyone else does.

I'm not special.
I don't have fewer demands, more time, or some magic ability to control everything.

I just stopped pretending there was a cost-free option with my choices.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer 11 years ago.

That changes how you see things.
You realise you can't control everything.
You can't wait for the "right time."
And you definitely can't wait for everyone's approval before you start creating the career and life you want.

Some colleagues thought I wasn't serious about my career because I took time off.

But I realised and believed that I could spend my whole career waiting for everyone's approval to create the career and life I wanted, as the best version of myself.

Or I could just do it.

You think you don't have a choice.
You do.
You're just afraid of what it costs.

What's it costing you to stay exactly where you are?

P.S. I may take a couple of days to get back to you. I'm on vacation. 😂
