VIDEO; Count to 10 is wrong. Its what happens next that matters.

Most barristers and lawyers have heard some version of the rule:

When you’re angry, count to ten before you respond.

There’s just one problem.

The science doesn’t support the idea that ten seconds somehow clears the anger or stress from your system.

But there is something useful buried inside the advice.

And it matters in mediation.

Because when an offer frustrates you, the other side becomes aggressive or you’re convinced they’re being unreasonable, your next response can influence what happens to the negotiation and its outcome.

High-performing lawyers don’t leave that response to chance.

The question isn’t whether you can count to ten.

It’s what you do with the gap before you respond.
