You Need To Master The Basics!

Most people think that conflict resolution is difficult.
The most successful conflict resolvers I know master the basics.
β
They lead conflict and are clear about what environment to create when they know conflict is possible (family gatherings) or already exists (workplaces or legal disputes) to achieve their ultimate goal.
β
They focus on what they can control (themselves - they know how they want to show up, interact, and how they want to lead others).
β
They communicate to influence (not manipulate or use power, guilt or status to get their way).
They accept these fundamental truths whether they're resolving conflict in:
- the workplace
- legal disputes (mediations)
- family gatherings
Most people don't understand this when resolving conflict and overcomplicate it, heading to automatic patterns:
β conflict avoidance - ignore or withdraw from the conflict, try to bury it
β win at all costs - forcefully assert their position regardless of the impact on others.
β accommodate - prioritise everyone else's needs above their own to maintain harmony.
The truth is that people don't have to be extraordinary at any one thing.
They have to learn and do the basics extraordinarily well.
So, which basic will you pick, as part of your game plan, when gathering with family (or spending time with people where there are strained relationships) during the holidays?
Mastering the basics is how I resolve conflict, personally and professionally.
It's how I help others resolve conflict in workplaces and legal disputes.
