I think a lot of barristers and senior lawyers relate to that.
Because responsiveness is good service.
Clients expect it.
Other solicitors (and barristers) value it.
Matters move more easily because of it.
But there’s a point where responsiveness stops being good service
and starts controlling your entire day.
One lawyer said:
“I would spend my entire day just responding to emails, and I wouldn't get any real work done till late.”
Another:
“Emails become the most important thing ..."
That’s some of the pressure you're under.
The inbox stops being a tool.
It starts training you to react all day.
And after a while, the work that has real-time deadlines keeps getting pushed later:
Your focus becomes fragmented, and nights and weekends become the only time left for focused work.
That starts feeling normal very quickly.
That’s the dangerous part.
Because a lot of barristers and lawyers think they have a workload problem.
When really they’ve spent years letting urgency decide their priorities for them.
