Most barristers and lawyers think hesitation is about not knowing enough.
It isn’t.
Most of the time, you know what to do.
Then self-doubt shows up.
You’re about to speak up.
About to say no.
About to send it.
About to ...
Then you hesitate.
Not because you don’t know the law.
Because you don’t trust yourself IF it's wrong.
It shows up like this:
You stop making a point you believed in once it's challenged.
You check your work again (and again) before sending what is ready.
You delay making decisions, and when you do, you worry you made the wrong one.
You let an important moment pass without speaking up when you wanted to.
You don’t pursue an opportunity because you’re not sure it’s worth it.
That’s hesitation = second-guessing.
Not a lack of legal skill.
A lack of trust in yourself.
I broke this down yesterday in Lawyer In Control.
