The assumption is that legal expertise, combined with AI capability, identifies top performers.

That's a mistake.

Clients don't trust lawyers because they're good with AI.

And they don't trust lawyers simply because they know the law.

Trust is earned through behaviour.

Particularly when things become difficult.

AI will become part of everyday legal practice.
Just like Zoom.
Just like email.
Just like Word.

At some point, using AI won't be remarkable.
It will be expected.

The baseline.

Which raises a question.
If every lawyer has access to the same AI tools, who will clients trust?

For years, firms have relied heavily on technical capability to identify talent.

AI is being added in as the latest measure.

The problem is that legal expertise, AI capability and trust are not the same thing.

Most lawyers already know the hard conversations they need to have.
The decision they need to make.
The issue they need to address.

AI can suggest a script.
It can generate options.

What it can't do is have the conversation for you.
Or make the decision.
Or set and hold the boundary.
Or deal with the consequences when things go wrong.

That's where trust is built.

And that's why legal expertise and AI capability alone will never identify the lawyers clients trust most.

If anything, as AI becomes more accessible, the ability to communicate well, make decisions, influence others and earn trust under pressure becomes more valuable.

Not less.
