Whenever someone finds out I’m a barrister, there’s usually a remark.

Sometimes a lawyer joke.
Sometimes, a story about a lawyer they dealt with.
Sometimes, a comment about legal fees or how much lawyers/barristers make.

It happens often enough that you notice.

The legal profession has a reputation.

And not all of it is flattering.

What’s interesting is that most lawyers believe professional reputation comes from three things:
Knowing the law.
Experience.
Technical expertise.

All important.
But also expected.

That’s not what people talk about when your name comes up.

The real conversations sound more like this.

“Did we really need all that work?”
“Why did this suddenly become so expensive?”
“That was technically right, but it didn’t help the client.”
“Great legal mind, but difficult to work with.”
“Hard to get hold of when you need them.”
“Do they listen, or just tell you their interpretation of the law and how right they are?”

Those conversations shape reputation in practice.

Not the ones on your CV.

The ones that happen when your name comes up, and you’re not in the room.

And those conversations determine more than most lawyers realise.

Who gets briefed.
Who gets referrals.
Who gets trusted by clients.

Here’s the trap.

Most high-achieving lawyers assume good legal work will take care of their reputation.

High performers know reputation is built deliberately.

Because reputation in law isn’t just about legal expertise.

It’s about the standard you operate at, and what people can expect when you're involved.

So here’s a simple test.
If your name came up today, what would people expect from you?

That question sits at the centre of Your Professional Reputation.

It’s a reality check for barristers and senior lawyers to examine the reputation their current standards are creating, and the reputation they want their name to represent.
