Are A Jerk Or A Giant?

Being seen as an aggressive and intimidating lawyer sounds smart.

And it's often expected.

The secret is to do the opposite.

While many play power games.

You win by refusing to play.

When I was a litigation barrister (now only doing mediations, coaching, and consulting), I was told by a senior barrister early in my career that I should be more aggressive.

Otherwise, I would fail as a litigation barrister; I wouldn't be briefed as I would be seen as too weak.

I accepted her opinion and refused her advice.
I chose how I wanted to show up.

In the past, I was a person who fired up quickly and got aggressive and in your face, and I had worked hard for years to shift my behaviour so I could lead myself (and others) better.

I wasn't going backwards.

Some people respected my respectful approach, and others tried to walk over me (they were wrong) 😁- they underestimated me - I already knew how to influence without aggression- intimidation - or relying on my title.

It's better to be:
Trusted - being honest works better than bullying
Optimistic - finding solutions when others see problems
Respectful - you don't need a fancy title to have influence
A good example - your actions speak louder than words

You'll be underestimated until your results speak for themselves.
Authentic leadership comes from trust, not intimidation, undermining or aggression—trusted legal leaders already know this.

Lawyers who diminish, bully, and undermine others aren't leaders; they're bullies with job titles.

Do something different.

Be a trusted legal leader who proves leadership skills and technical legal excellence go hand in hand.
