What I Thought Was Helping… Was Making It Worse.
Breaking That Pattern Changed Everything.
I learned high-performance habits and how to approach preparation before I became a barrister.
Focused.
Intentional.
Clear on what mattered—and what didn't.
But once I was in the thick of practising law
Still finding my feet, taking on more with added pressure
I slipped back into habits I thought I'd already changed.
Reworking what was already solid.
Spending hours trying to improve things that didn't need improving.
Pushing past "ready" because it didn't feel ready.
At the time, it felt like I was ensuring I was on top of things.
Like I was being thorough.
Like I was being my best.
And I see it all the time.
Lawyers. Barristers.
Years into their careers- still carrying that same fear:
"What if I haven't done enough?"
They don't call it fear, of course.
They call it being prepared.
But underneath? It's the same pressure and self-doubt.
Because the pressure doesn't always come from the workload.
It comes from where you focus your attention.
And when your attention is locked on trying to cover everything perfectly-
You can burn hours in prep, and it doesn't improve your performance because you still walk in unsure and unfocused.
It's easy to justify:
"I just want to be across everything."
"What if they raise something I haven't thought of?"
"I'd rather overprepare than risk missing something."
But here's what I've had to remind myself and to create change - again:
Spending more time doesn't always make you more prepared.
Sometimes it just makes you more anxious.
You walk in feeling more pressure.
You're already exhausted.
And you're still second-guessing yourself, wondering if you've done enough.
And the worst part?
You start to believe this is just how it works in law.
That spending hours overpreparing is the cost of being the best.
It's not.
High-performance ≠ pressure.
That's why I created the Winning Preparation Sheet.
Not to help you do more.
To help you prepare for what matters most and stop when it's done.
