You never go into a mediation or attend court unprepared.
But most lawyers go into the year that way.

Not because you don’t want change.
Not because you can’t see what needs fixing.

Because busyness still equals value in this profession.

So January starts busy.
Nothing gets decided.

No clear plan for how you’ll operate.
No firm calls on what stops and what starts.
The year stays open to whatever comes.

And then it plays out like it always does.

January: reacting.
February: back in the same groove.
March: behind.
May: trying to contain it.
June: managing numbers, not direction.

Nothing goes wrong.
The work keeps coming.
The money’s fine.

You can earn well.
And it still feels hard.
Even when you’re doing it the way the profession expects.

Most years don’t fall apart.
They just run on default.
Because default keeps you working hard, but never ahead.

The lawyers who win in 2026 decide earlier.
Not by blowing everything up.
They just don’t let the year decide for them.

If next year still feels unplanned,
it’s because it was left that way.

I write about how barristers and lawyers operate at elite levels under pressure.
