The lawyers who try hardest to fit the "traditional lawyer mould" are the ones struggling most to stand out.
They all have the same headshots.
Same LinkedIn and website profiles.
Same approach to resolving conflict and leading (legal expertise ≠leadership).
The same way of presenting themselves and their expertise.
And then they wonder why potential clients and top talent can't tell them apart from the 50 other lawyers in the profession.
I started studying law at 40.
I brought my unique blend of:
- life experience
- business perspective
- leadership skills and experience
- and a completely different way of thinking about legal problems, legal practice and leadership.
✅I wore colour to court—and as a mediator (and still do).
✅I cut (and used to colour) my hair in edgy ways (now it's natural = grey) 😁.
✅I don't speak legalese - I speak simple English, directly, kindly, and honestly.
✅I showed up as the same ambivert person I am with cleaners, clients and senior practitioners.
I never apologised for my unconventional path and my differences - I leveraged them.
I built two practices as a barrister from zero, knowing no one. Why? Because I was authentic, and that built trust.
But here's the difference in law now:
People no longer just want legal expertise.
They expect all lawyers to have legal expertise.
They want to work with leaders they trust - those who communicate well, who keep their word, who resolve conflict beyond legal skills.
Building that kind of trust comes from authenticity (not conformity) and skills beyond the law.
When you show up as yourself—completely, unapologetically—clients see someone they can rely on to think differently, challenge assumptions and the status quo, and lead them through complex situations with confidence.
Your differences aren't flaws to hide or to be dismissed – they're your leadership advantage.
Stop minimising what sets YOU apart.
Start building your practice and leadership success around it.

Because here's what I know for sure: your best clients, top talent, colleagues, and counterparts don't need or want a 'fake' version of you; they want to trust you, so why are you doing it?
