Make A Decision!

I have noticed that the lawyers who come to me struggle with one (or all) of these:
- Leading themselves and others
- Communicating influentially and persuasively
Often because:
- They believe technical legal skills are enough to succeed. (They're not.)
- They hide what they don't know or who they are, trying to look like the "perfect expert." (Big mistake.)
- They think conflict is just about legal arguments. (It's not—people don't move because of logic alone.)
- They don't lead themselves well—imposter syndrome, fear, and self-doubt run the show.
- They stay in their "legal expert bubble," struggling to influence and lead.
When others rely on technical skills alone to lead—because they aren't willing to be a beginner and learn leadership skills—they become stuck, convinced that every decision could make or break their careers and lives.
When I decided to study law, I had:
No legal connections
No legal experience
I had no clue what court order or torts were
The difference between a red and a blue bag for Barristers. đ
The learning curve wasn't steep—it was vertical.
But I had one advantage: I was willing to 'look' stupid and learn.
Because to do otherwise meant I was accepting where I was as the limit of what was possible.
I had spent years learning, practising and mastering leadership skills.
That made the complicated learning process simple.
I realised my leadership skills were my secret weapon.
Not because they taught me legal concepts—
But because they taught me how to control what I can (lead myself)
The calmer I was - the better I could learn (No one can learn when feeling overwhelmed or stressed out)
This works for everything: in court, team and client challenges, communicating with influence and even team issues.
So I calmly:
Raised my hand and asked for help
Asked "dumb" questions, commented in class -made mistakes and felt embarrassed
I showed up as a beginner and a learner - who could lead myself.
And here's what happened next.
The combination of mastering law with leadership skills changed everything.
It's no different in practice and business.
Legal skills will get you to base camp and then plateau in leadership.
High-performance leadership skills will get you to the summit. â°ď¸
So next time you want to:
* Command any room
* Attract and keep premium clients
* Build a strong reputation that wins on every level.
* Influence people and outcomes
Stop.
What technical skills will you use, and identify the leadership skill gaps you need to learn?
Don't be fooled into thinking that your technical skills are all you need.
It's often just the opposite.
The best legal leaders are technical experts AND high-performing leaders willing to embrace being a beginner.
