Then I realised I wasn't helping, I was making them feel smaller.
This distinction has been on my mind a lot lately.
In law, we often focus on positioning ourselves as the best legal experts:
- showcasing the right credentials
- being seen to support the right causes
- building the best legal reputation
But here's what I've learnt over many years learning leadership:
The difference between manipulation and leadership influence isn't intent - it's impact.
We can have the best intentions, but if our influence (by behaviour and words) leaves people feeling confused, overwhelmed, or diminished, we're missing the mark, regardless of what we tell ourselves.
Trusted leadership expands someone's perspective in a way that genuinely serves them.
You know you've done this when clients (team members, colleagues, anyone) walk away feeling clearer, more confident, and better equipped.
The test isn't whether we meant well.
The test is whether they're better off after interacting with us.
If this resonates, I dive deeper into the expert lawyer-to-influential trusted leader transition in my Trust Trio Workshop. It's all about clarifying your leadership identity beyond just legal expertise.
